Disney

"Where imagination saves the day!!", says the punchline.

Now, many girls might have already "imagined" him as their "proverbial-dragon-slaying-princess-rescuing" Prince (and not Shrek ;-))

Anyway Beckham's makeover as Prince Phillip from Sleeping Beauty was one of three new celebrity portraits shot by the world-renowned photographer Annie Leibovitz for the Disney campaign. Others in this series were Pop star Beyonce Knowles, was featured as a demure Alice in Wonderland, sitting in a teacup alongside fellow singer Lyle Lovett as the March Hare and actor Oliver Platt as the Mad Hatter. A third one was actress Scarlett Johansson photographed as Cinderella. Have a look at these ads by clicking on the label below.

Beckham's ad came soon after his move to USA and to the LA Galaxy soccer team.

adMad Trivia #65 answer
I thought the names of brothers Walt and the mention of media would be clue enough for thinking of Walt Disney but guess I was mistaken ;-) Only 2 correct entries this time and the winner is Gauri! Special congrats to you!

adMad Trivia #64
The name of this song (which is also the name of an automobile brand) by Janis Joplin, Michael McClure and Bob Neuwirth, was intended as a gentle satire on materialism, but, ironically, has since been used in the automobile brand's advertising. Apart from this, this brand tops with being mentioned 112 times in a list of most frequently mentioned brands in the Top 20 songs from the Billboard Hot 100 (2003-2004). Just name the brand. If you cant get it, try sing "Hotel California" ;-))

Videocon

Sensex falls by 10,000 points! Stay cool no matter what. Okay, people who follow the stock market closely would find this ad shocking and may even hate the company for coming up with such an ad :p. This was released for Videocon's air conditioners and coolers. Will this ad work despite creating negative sentiments in some of the target audience? Or that's what it is intended to do? What do u think?

adMad Trivia
The answer was Videocon, one of the few Indian consumer durables manufacturer who sustained and succeeded economic liberalisation. The lucky winner for the day is Jiby. Congrats man, and to all those who got it correct! Let's move on to today's dose of trivia.

adMad Trivia #62
This corporation was founded in 1850, in Buffalo, New York, by Henry Wells, William Fargo and John Butterfield. In 1882, they launched its money order business to compete with the US Post Office's money orders. J.C. Fargo took a trip to Europe and returned frustrated that despite being the president of a company and though he carried with him traditional letters of credit, he found it difficult to obtain cash anywhere except in major cities. Mr. Fargo went to Marcellus Flemming Berry and asked him to create a better solution than the traditional letter of credit. What was the product created and also name the company. Very very guessable.

Kerala - God's own Country

Back in 2005, during my B-school days, we had to give a presentation about communication campaigns as part of our marketing course. My group took "Express Yourself" by Airtel. After our presentation, another group came to deliver theirs. And before they started, they played an ad. The entire class was spellbound. And it was the ad you just saw..

As for me, I was kind of stumped when I saw this ad. Is my Kerala this beautiful? But after that, it occured to me. Yes, she is beautiful. Probably, i didn't realize this because I never tried to realize it.

And "Kerala - God's own country" is one of the most successful communication campaigns ran by the Dept. of Tourism, Kerala. In case you are curious, the initial "God's own Country" ad campaign was envisioned by a team from Mudra and the account has been later handled by Stark Communications.

The ad is artistic, nostalgic and showcases a Kerala which is serene, pristine and different from any place you know. It also focuses on the culture - via the indigenous art forms which Kerala has to offer. It would generate in any one, a desire to visit God's own country some day.

Please do share your opinion on this awesome ad in the "Review/Comment" section.

adMad Trivia
So "God's own country" was the title of Thomas Bracken's poem. A big round of applause to all who got their answers correct. The lucky winner for the day is Div. Congrats there. Now moving on to today's trivia.

adMad Trivia #61
The founder of this corporate was Nandlal Madhavlal Dhoot. A successful sugarcane and cotton grower, he established a sugar mill in Maharashtra's Gangapur in 1955. He initiated his three sons: Venugopal, Rajkumar and Pradeep into electronics business with collaboration from Toshiba. Currently this company has a market capitalisation of almost Rs. 90 billion or Rs. 9000 crore ($2 Billion), and its logo includes two 'E's on either side which represent the Group's wide spectrum of interests ranging from 'Electronics to Energy'. Just name the company.

Cocacola

Now, that's what you call determination! Donno whether this one is released in India. Share your thoughts on this ad in the comments section...

adMad Trivia
So, the non alcoholic drink was as simple as Coca-cola. What happened after 1886 is history. It created a brand with #1 brand value in the world. The additive of Coca-cola is still unknown to the rest of the world and is one of the well kept business secrets.

The winner for the day is Anish. Congrats sir and to all those who got their answers correct. Keep the spirit going and do spread the word of adMad and adMad Trivia arround! Now today's dose of Trivia.

adMad Trivia #60
A small prologue to the trivia. I was telling flaash yesterday (well, he is very fond of video ads for which I was against initially but had to succumb to his pressure ;-)) that I got an awesome video ad, if he can make a question out of it. When I told him about the ad, he was in the air :p. Not because it was a video ad or the ad was that great (On second thoughts, I guess it is indeed great) but as it was something close to our hearts. I guess it would be the same with many of you :-). Hmm.. okies.. I have added enough to the expectation levels :p. So here goes the question!

The earliest recorded use of the 3 word phrase was as the title of a poem about New Zealand written by Thomas Bracken sometime in the 1880s. It was published in a book of his poems in 1890, and then again in 1893 in a book containing a selection of his works, titled "Lays and Lyrics: ................. and Other Poems". However, nowadays if you hear this phrase you would not think of New Zealand and instead would be thinking of another land quite far from it but arguably; as beautiful. Name this phrase which has also become one of the "Superbrands".

adMad Trivia
adMad Trivia #59
This ex-Confederate Lieutenent Colonel may have been inspired by the formidable success of European Angelo Mariani's wine called Vin Mariani and developed his own recipe in those lines. In 1885, Atlanta and Fulton County passed a Prohibition legislation, and he responded by making some changes to the original, adding stimulant leaves and making it non-alcoholic. The first serving in 1886 cost US$0.05. Name the person and which brand was born this way?

Jon Rubinstein, assembled a team of engineers to design it, including Tony Fadell, hardware engineer Michael Dhuey, and design engineer Jonathan Ive, with Stan Ng as the marketing manager. The product was developed in less than a year and unveiled on 23 October 2001.Its name was proposed by Vinnie Chieco, a freelance copywriter, who (with others) was called to figure out how to introduce the new player to the public. adMad Trivia #57
Long question, sorry- but its for a cool ad for tomorrow. Try it out and google if you have to ;-))

In 1946, the Institute for the Study of Analgesic and Sedative Drugs awarded a grant to the New York City Department of Health to study the problems associated with analgesic agents. Bernard Brodie and Julius Axelrod were assigned to investigate why non-aspirin agents were associated with the development of methemoglobinemia, a condition that decreases the oxygen-carrying capacity of blood and is potentially
lethal. In 1948, they linked the use of acetanilide with methemoglobinemia and determined that the analgesic effect of acetanilide was due to its active metabolite paracetamol. They advocated the use of Paracetamol, since it did not have the toxic effects of acetanilide. The product went on sale in the United States in 1955 under the brand name Tylenol. What was the brand name used in the UK for Paracetamol?

Olay

Dont we wish we could do this to many more things in life? Great ad in my opinion. But then who will be the target audience here? IT Savvy women professionals? Also was wondering whether the target age group be tech savvy enough to get this? ;-). Wwhat do you think of the same? Do use the "Reviews of the Ad" Section.

adMad Trivia #55 answer
The product being Oil of Olay it's only "fair" ;-) that the winner is a lady. And so the winner for the day is "Gauri". Congrats and do keep trying the daily adMad trivia here.

adMad Trivia #56
The product idea for this brand happened when a bank branch manager, stopped by a local store and observed clerks in a back room preparing customers' monthly bills. It struck him as inefficient to spend so much time (and money) to prepare and collect bills that were often for paltry amounts, and he wondered if the process could be efficiently centralized, with his bank's computer preparing the bills in off-hours. The original goal of the company was to offer the system across California; however in 1965 the bank began subscribing licensing agreements with a group of banks outside of California. Over the following 11 years, various banks licensed the card system from Bank of America, forming a network of banks backing the BankAmericard system across the United States. In 1974, IBANCO, a multinational member corporation, was founded in order to manage the international BankAmericard program. In 1977 BankAmericard, Chargex, Barclaycard, Carte Bleue, and all other licensees united under a new name which retained the distinctive blue, white and gold flag. Name the brand name which was chosen for being a instantly recognizable name symbolizing universal acceptance?

adMad Trivia
The winner for adMad Trivia #55 is Deepthi Nair. Congrats to you and to all those who got their answers correct. Now moving on to today's trivia...
For those who came in late, we ask a trivia question everyday and the answer will be the brand whose ad we will be posting tomorrow.

adMad Trivia #56
The name for this brand was chosen by Graham Wulff, a Unilever chemist
from Durban who started it in 1949 as a spin on the word "lanolin", a
key ingredient. It was unique in the early days because it was a pink
fluid rather than a cream, packaged in a heavy glass bottle. Wulff and his
marketing partner, Jack Lowe, a former copywriter, had tested the
product on their wives and friends and were confident in its uniqueness and
quality. This is now a Procter & Gamble brand, based around a facial
moisturizer skin care product. Name the brand.

Disney Parks

So, what sort of people do you expect to meet at Disney Parks? Here's Alice, Mad Hatter and the other characters from Disney's Alice in Wonderland coming to life in Disney Parks. Disney's Alice in Wonderland which combined story elements from both Alice books by Lewis Carroll was an animated feature, released in 1951. It popularized the iconic image of Alice in America as a pretty girl in a white pinafore and a blue dress...

adMad Trivia #55
There are many stories about where this word came from.Probably the most popular notion has it that the vehicle bore the designation "GP" (for "General Purpose"), which was phonetically slurred into this word. R. Lee Ermey, on his television series Mail Call, disputes this, saying that the vehicle was designed for specific duties, was never referred to as "General Purpose," and that the name may have been derived from Ford's nomenclature referring to the vehicle as GP (G for government-use, and P to designate its 80-inch-wheelbase). It was used by soldiers as a slang word for new recruits, an airplane, a tractor used for hauling heavy equipment, and an autogyro. How do we know this word/ brand name now which is used rather generically by all of us?

Please put this as a comment in "Enter trivia Answer" section. As the comments moderation has been enabled, your answer wont be visible to all. We will publish the names of the winners tomorrow. Have a nice day..

Marketed as Animal Technology in a car, in this ad, every feature of the car is equated to that of an animal, which is the best in that feature. For example the grip of the tyre to the grip of an octopus, the speed to that of a cheetah and so on.

Nike

Just do it!! The picture was the product of a three-hour photoshoot by an unnamed photographer and was the brainchild jointly of Nike executives and their advertising agency Wieden and Kennedy. Drenched in blood-red paint and screaming a war-cry, this chilling image of Wayne Rooney in England's 2006 World Cup campaign was condemned as 'offensive', 'exploitative' and 'tacky' by MPs and church groups (as it was considered to be a deliberate echo of Christ's crucifixion) though according to Nike it was nothing more than the England flag... What is your take on this? Do share your review in the comments section.

adMad Trivia
So the answer for last trivia is Nike. From another awesome response, the winner turned out to be Gauri. Congrats there and to all those who got their answers correct. Keep the spirit going :-). Now today's dose.

They are a huge brand but often controversial. In 2004, their ad about Lebron James beating cartoon martial arts masters in basketball offended Chinese authorites, who called the ad blasphemous and insulting to national dignity. The ad was later banned in China. The forced labor camp like conditions in some overseas production plants of this company led to several boycotts together with coining the alternative name "swooshtika" for their brand. Recently they have ventured into a hitherto unexplored market and introduced the brand Air Zoom Yorker, designed to be 30% lighter than their competitors. Name the brand.

adMad Trivia #51
In 2006, this brand made an image change. Before the change, Mumbai was overrun with hoardings that simply said, "Bye". A week later the same billboards sported the new brand image of the company. According to the VP, Corporate Marketing of the company, "The idea is just to refresh the brand, and inculcate a new '_____ spirit'. In mid 2006, this company acquired another company of its genre to become one of the top players in its sector, only to be acquired later by another company from the west. The deal is still in the news. Their ads are known for excellent creativity and simplicity. What is the brand that we are talking about.

adMad Trivia
The winner for adMad Trivia #49 was Anish. Congrats sir and to all those who got their answers correct. Now moving on to today's trivia......

adMad Trivia #50

In 1930, the Mars family introduced this brand, named after one of their favorite horses. It is made by forming a nougat center into large slabs, which are cut to size once the caramel and peanuts have been added. After the centers are formed, they are coated with thick milk chocolate. In the United Kingdom and Ireland, these were originally sold under the name "Marathon" but in 1990 they went for a name change campaign causing much derision, as the unfamiliar new name was, to British ears, meaningless, and sounded very much like "Knickers". In 2006, the UK Food Commission highlighted celebrity chef Antony Worrall Thompson's "....... pie", which contained five bars of this brand among other ingredients, suggesting it was one of the unhealthiest desserts ever; one slice providing "over 1,250 calories from sugar and fat alone", more than half a day's requirement for an average adult. Just name the brand.

Audi

Weird one I thought. How would the agency have convinced the car company to put an ad like this ? Would they have said " Here's the idea, we wont show the car at all, we'll have an ugly torn poster and all that remains on it will be the Audi logo" And they would have gone " Awesome, what a amazing concept. People will certainly flock to buy our car after this!!. How much would you like to be paid for working so hard on this" ?? ;-))))

Hehehe...what do you think about this???

General Motors

The tagline says, "Speed kills. Slow down". GM released this ad as part of an awareness campaign. A multi level flyover is effectively modified to resemble a human figure. The message is clear. Drive slowly, else get laid down in the road. Different thinking.

adMad Trivia #48
This company was called DAT Motorcar Co. which was an acronym of the company's partners' surnames: Kenjiro Den, Rokuro Aoyama and Meitaro Takeuchi. Later, holding company Nippon Sangyo took it over, and the Datsun name was created in 1931 by the company for their new car model. They spelled it "Datson" to indicate its smaller size compared to their existing, larger DAT car. Later, in 1933 the last syllable of Datson was changed to "sun", because "son" also means "loss"(?) in Japanese, hence the name "Datsun"(?????, Dattosan) was chosen. How do we know this company now?

(Bonus Clue: Recently in the news in India, their new project is expected to increase Tamil Nadu’s Gross Domestic Product(GDP) by Rs. 18,000 crore annually while providing 41,000 jobs.)
