Videocon

Sensex falls by 10,000 points! Stay cool no matter what. Okay, people who follow the stock market closely would find this ad shocking and may even hate the company for coming up with such an ad :p. This was released for Videocon's air conditioners and coolers. Will this ad work despite creating negative sentiments in some of the target audience? Or that's what it is intended to do? What do u think?

The answer was Videocon, one of the few Indian consumer durables manufacturer who sustained and succeeded economic liberalisation. The lucky winner for the day is Jiby. Congrats man, and to all those who got it correct! Let's move on to today's dose of trivia.

adMad Trivia #62
This corporation was founded in 1850, in Buffalo, New York, by Henry Wells, William Fargo and John Butterfield. In 1882, they launched its money order business to compete with the US Post Office's money orders. J.C. Fargo took a trip to Europe and returned frustrated that despite being the president of a company and though he carried with him traditional letters of credit, he found it difficult to obtain cash anywhere except in major cities. Mr. Fargo went to Marcellus Flemming Berry and asked him to create a better solution than the traditional letter of credit. What was the product created and also name the company. Very very guessable.

I think this is a bad ad for the coolers/acs. Had this ad been for some kind of cushion financial instrument like insurance! it might have worked. Because in the prospect's mind what will go is: how to cope or avoid the negative circumstances as shown/depicted in the ad. I immediately remember, advertisements of fire extinguishers, where they show the aftermath of an uncontrolled fire, this kind of ad will work. But here there is no relation of sensex and staying cool in an ac. Especially, because the ad shows financial crises and then juxtaposes it with product like an ac, it falls flat. I would call it a 'bakwas' ad.
